Let's get Roman.....
In an uncannily coherent piece, the L.A. Times' David Zucchino describes the newest tactics being used by one particular Army Colonel in Iraq: 'Tell me who killed my soldier and you might live. Otherwise we torch your houses and salt the Earth'.. (paraphrase)..No doubt these tactics were the result of focus groups and congressionally funded studies chaired by such battle-hardened leathernecks like Barbara Boxer and Dennis Kucinich.......
It's a good read-

""We will hunt down the enemy if he attacks us," the colonel told his staff. "I don't want to give him any rest or refuge. I want to haunt his dreams."
"For nearly an hour, he railed at the Iraqis. "I told them I have money in one hand and tanks in the other," he said. "I asked them what they wanted: the money or the tank."
"His voice cracked, and he wiped his eyes with his fist. "Screw those bastards. I'll hunt every one of them down. Palmatier died because of some coward." Inside his desk drawer, the colonel has placed a photo of Palmatier manning the grenade launcher. Next to it is a piece of shrapnel from the fatal roadside bomb.
By the way, what happened to all the long-haired, courageous 'Human-shields'?...Where's Sean Penn or tim Robbins when you need a shrapnel receptacle?
Here also is a refreshing response to the above article by a reader:
"It's about time that I read that in response to a soldier's death, his commanding officer took immediate action by informing the locals what he was about to do. Either help get the peopel who killed my soldier or suffer the consequences.
..Amazing how people, when offered life and the opportunity for prosperity rather than death and destruction, choose life and the opportunity for prosperity, even when it means turning in insurgents. Amazing how when the threat is clear, and without ambiguity, people start seeing the light of day. Now if we can only get those liberals to understand this and let the military do its job. Without the politically correct crowd getting on the military's case, we might be able to end this war quicker and with fewer caualties to those American troops for whom they seem to profess such support while hating what they are doing.."
In my view, when in a war, fight a war. Col. Cloutier was showing once again, that we are a fair and just people, to a fault. His decision to inform the town of his intent may have been risky, allowing terrorists more time to organize another, spectacular strike... the kind the US media would love to splash all over TV to smear Bush. Yet his tactics paid off in this instance.
We always hear that 'we're above the level of the terrorist'. Well yes, we are. But this enemy has no self-respect, no sense of self-preservation, no remorse whatsoever. When terrorists murdered 35 children by disguising a truck-bomb as an ice-cream truck late last year, it's clear that they understand one language: Power and fear.
This stage of the terror war can only be won by speaking their language louder than they do.
